Security Isn’t Just for Moving Day: Why Life Transitions Deserve a Lock Check
Published: May 24, 2025

When we think about home or business security, it’s usually tied to major events — moving into a new place, going on vacation, or recovering from a break-in.

But the truth is, most security vulnerabilities show up quietly, during the day-to-day changes we don’t always think twice about.

Maybe your key doesn’t unlock the front door like it used to.
Maybe the cylinder has started spinning freely — or you have to jiggle the key just right.
Maybe the side door has to be yanked shut to fully latch.
These small issues don’t seem urgent… until the day they leave you locked out or vulnerable.

These are the blind spots.

What to Look for Around Your Home

A security check doesn’t need to take long — but it should be focused. Walk around your home and look at it the way a locksmith or potential intruder might. You’re looking for weak spots, outdated habits, and any mechanical issues you’ve gotten used to ignoring.

Here are a few things to check:

Locks

  • Are they turning smoothly and fully engaging?
  • Is there any grinding, sticking, or looseness in the handle or cylinder?
  • Does the key need to be jiggled or turned a specific way to work?
  • Are strike plates and screws firmly in place?

Doors

  • Do doors fully latch when shut?
  • Any gaps, cracks, or soft spots in the door frame?
  • Can exterior doors be pushed or pulled without unlocking?

Key & Code Access

  • Who currently has keys or codes?
  • Have you had guests, contractors, or past tenants who still might have the keys/codes?
  • Are any smart lock codes due for an update?
  • Is anyone sharing access who shouldn’t be?

Secondary Entry Points

  • Garage doors: is the interior door between garage and home locked and reinforced?
  • Basement and side doors: are they secure and in good shape?
  • Sheds and storage areas: do they lock properly?

Don’t Wait for a Reason

Many people say, “I’m not moving, I don’t travel much… I don’t really need to worry about security right now.”
But the reality is, life is constantly changing. And security should adapt with it — not fall behind.

Even without major changes, it’s smart to walk your space, test your locks, and double-check who has access. If something feels off — or if you just can’t remember the last time you checked — that’s your sign to take action.
